  • Recommendation: Daily Journal

A friend of my husband's family and a fellow bible study member gave this devotional to my sister-in-law for graduation this past summer. I had a chance to look at it at her party and asked Debbie where she found it. The book is published by Reformers Unanimous. One of the area churches has it in their bookstore, but it's also available online here. This week Debbie and her husband brought a copy to church for me! I am easily distracted and very much a day dreamer, so I've always benefited from using devotionals, however my usual complaint is that you are forced to study the material they cover. The problem with that is it may be too easy, too difficult, or irrelevant to your current situation or studies. I have found myself flipping between several different devotionals or skipping chapters to compensate for this. The awesome thing about this devotional is it's more of a journal than a devotional, but it still has the structure I need to stay on track. You fill in which Proverb and which chapters of the Bible you are reading, and there is space to record any insight you might get from your reading. There is a place to take notes from "teaching," which might be a sermon, CD, or book you are reading (pretty flexible). There is a place to record prayer requests, several lines to write down questions you are struggling with, and an area to write down "God Things" or leading from the Holy Spirit, such as people you should encourage. It focuses on spending time on the five forms of communication with God, which they explain in the first section of the book. I can already tell this book is going to really change my quiet times and their effectiveness in my life.
