  • Answered Prayers Came in $3M Jackpot Donation

    from AllConfused

3millionjackpot I just wanted to share with you a great blessing my church has received.

We’ve been greatly blessed. In the three years since our church’s conception it has grown greatly. I’ve only been attending for a year and a half and have seen it grow. We’ve grown so much that we’re outgrowing our building! A fifth service is being added to accommodate the growing congregation. A month ago, our senior pastor informed us that unless God intervened, we would be going portable in a year. This means having services in a school, hotel, movie theater, etc. A church without a home. Not that I am against this, but I know that it is a whole lot of work which is handled mostly by volunteers. But guess what happened? God intervened. God blessed us by way of a generous soul and a $3 million dollar lottery ticket. How amazing is our God?

God is using this blessing not only to bless us, but to bless others as well. It’s even been featured in our local paper. (see article below) It’s a great responsibility. To whom much is given much will be required. (Luke 12:48) I believe that we are up to the challenge.

Answered prayers came in $3 million jackpot donation

It was an unpleasant announcement for Pastor Bertrand Crabbe to make to his congregation at True North Community Church in Port Jefferson Station. The group had outgrown its home on Terryville Road and would soon have to take up a nomadic existence for the foreseeable future - holding services out of rented ballrooms or school gyms.

"Unless God drops a million on us, we're going to have to rent a facility somewhere," he recalled joking from the pulpit yesterday.

He never thought that one of the congregation members would take it as a suggestion.

Weeks later, an anonymous member donated the entire jackpot prize of a Ba-Da Bling scratch-off lottery ticket, worth $3 million, the New York Lottery announced yesterday at Eldorado Southern Grille in Port Jefferson Station. The church will receive $150,000 a year, minus taxes, for 20 years. Because True North, a nondenominational Christian church with 650 members, is a nonprofit, the church can file for refund claims for a portion or all of the taxes withheld by the lottery.

"I was stunned," Crabbe said of receiving the donation. "I was in disbelief, but I was immediately very excited, because I could tell that this person was serious."

Crabbe said that only he and his wife, Jennifer, know the identity of the donor, whose only stipulation was anonymity. The donor bought the $10 ticket in Middle Island on July 19 and told Crabbe the same day. The congregation's 12-member leadership board spent the next week deciding what to do.

Eventually, they decided, "we're giving that whole first year away," said Melissa Joles, of the church planning team.

The bulk of the first-year money, $102,225 after taxes, would go to Love', a New Haven-based charity that looks to end child sex trafficking. The Lighthouse Mission in Patchogue, which feeds the poor, and Prodigal House in Port Jefferson Station, a halfway home for boys, will also get donations. After that, the church has promised to tithe at least 20 percent of the earnings and use the rest for a bigger meeting place.

Because the church only holds a maximum of 210 people, it has four services every Sunday and is looking to add another.

True North plans to rent space for a little while, Crabbe said, "but [the money] will help. It might even help us find a permanent place."

The reaction from the congregation, he said, was subdued for the first few seconds. "There was stunned silence and scattered applause," Crabbe said, "until they realized I wasn't kidding."

And as for speculation that the mystery donor was either him or fellow pastor Mike Brennan, Crabbe said no way.

"I'd give a lot of it to the church, but not all of it," Crabbe said. "This is a rare, remarkable, generous person."

    And if not him, who?

"Sorry," he said with a wide grin. "Can't help you."

I'm not religious, and I believe it's nothing but dumb luck that landed the church member his winning ticket.

Still, I can't help but admire the depth of conviction and the wide perspective it takes to do something so utterly selfless. I can't imagine the guy being well off financially to begin with.

While I don't agree with the factual claims of the Bible, I believe that churches serve the community and build cohesiveness. I'm glad to see that the money is going somewhere good.

I saw this on CNN this morning.  The money we have is Gods to begin with and when we do with it what he wishes we are always blessed in return...greater than the original monetary blessing.  I believe the giver will find great reaping from what they have sowed.

Many churches teach that their members shouldn't even BUY those tickets, so I guess they are glad that they didn't take that stance.

I remember many years ago, sometime in the late 70's, some Pastor's wife won a large amount in a state lottery, and he said he wasn't to be blamed for her activity.  He also wasn't going to accept any gifts from her if the source was that winning.  I'm afraid we can get pretty legalistic in some ways and times.

I don't buy the tickets myself, but I have family members who give me tickets during the holidays and they enjoy watching what we all scratch off and love it when someone wins something.  I don't think lotteries are the root of foolish gambling; but I just don't think that it's right to toss away money on something that is any kind of "gamble".

I thought gambling was strictly forbidden in Deuteronomy and I think also in Acts, or Timothy, can't remember which.   I guess it's okay if it benefits the church some how.  Ever pragmatic, Christians are.

This guy should have done ANYTHING ELSE with that money.

Hope God will use this to do great things for His kingdom.

Hmmm....I'm not really sure that I agree with a church accepting money from a lottery ticket.  I feel kinda....well, "not right" about a church that promotes gambling (and yes, by accepting this money, they are, in my mind, promoting gambling).
