    Even though my answers probably are mostly wrong, my heart is very much in this....my nephews were adopted five years ago from Congo, where their family experienced genocide firsthand.  They lost both parents and their sisters, and were rescued by the refugee ministry at my sister's church in Evanston, IL.   This church has supported many refugees from many Asian and African countries, especially Libya, Sudan and Congo, and has done hands-on mission work in Rwanda.  Please, get involved in this type of mission work if you can.  These families are so appreciative and really need our love, support and a fresh start - and safety.

    @imississippiyou@xanga - I completely agree.  Funny how that always gets swept under the rug.  We ought to all be talking about it more, since we grew up on spoon-fed and falsified American History in our schools.  It pains me deeply what happened to the Native Americans.  "Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee" should be required reading before exiting HS in the U.S.  I just read it this summer and I'm OLD.

    @trunthepaige@xanga -

    actually, the atrocities that occured in cambodia from 1975-1979 are considered genocide. pol pot (the khmer rouge leader) aimed his killings towards all cambodians who were city dwellers, educated, had an ties to industrialism or american affairs (even if people who wore glasses).  basically anyone who was not a farmer was sent to a concentration labor camp.

    my parents were survivors of this genocide.

          to set the oppressed free

    Tough quiz, I feel bad now for knowing so little.

  • christykim@xanga

    I'm so glad that you mentioned the Armenian genocide.

    It's pathetic, really... It's called the "forgotten genocide" and for a good reason: just as hinted at in your question, the Holocaust and other current genocides stay in people's minds, but do most people know about the genocide? Nope. The Turkish government has not apologized for it, even after 90-ish years since the genocide took place (don't you think that's enough time to put distance between the perpetrators and the humble apologizers?)-- and no one wants to force them to, especially the Americans, since they don't want to upset Turkey. Which just proves that we need more Christ-like humility in the world today.

  • thepurpleporpoise

    @hubbaduh@xanga - The discussion of genocide (and making ourselves aware of it) is intrinsically related to Christianity because of the value of human life.  I think it would be true regardless of whether there was a follow-up post on this or not. I look forward to the follow-up post, but not so I can see how it relates to Christianity, it's just good discussion to have.

  • hubbaduh@xanga

    @thepurpleporpoise - I get what you're saying, and I actually agree, it's just that every other post that I've read on here has been OVERTLY "Christian"...this is the first one that I've read that hasn't been (not saying that there haven't been others that weren't).  I'm just curious about how they're going to "tie it all together."

    As an addendum, I note there are no questions on the extermination of the native peoples of America by Europeans and there is nothing about the genocide of the Chinese, Koreans, Filipinos and other native populations by the Japanese during WWII. Look up the Rape of Nanking, the Rape of Manila, the Japanese use of comfort women, etc. Just as horrific as what the Germans did but hidden by consensus by both the Allies (specifically American leadership) and the Japanese because of post-war concerns.
