Genocide Quiz: Part II Answers
by mr mapleGo here for: Genocide Quiz: Part I
Here we go! And yes, I am answering these off the top of my head, though I made sure I knew the answers before writing the questions! For the sake of education, other references have been made; main references are Samantha Power's book A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide and Wikipedia. Since this turned out to be really long, commentary will follow in Part III.1) What ethnic group is most widely recognized to have been persecuted in the Holocaust?
The Jewish people. Also included were marginalized groups such as the Gypsies, mentally disabled, homosexuals, etc.2) Nazi doctors justified the extermination of certain people groups based on what pseudo-scientific theory?
Eugenics, which - as people noted - is the logical extension of Darwinian "survival of the fittest". Wikipedia phrases it gently as the improvement of human hereditary traits through "intervention".
Bonus: What philosopher is credited for providing the utilitarian justifications for the Holocaust? While Darwin may have provided the framework for the popularization of such philosophy, the real person credited with this is George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (a contemporary of sorts to Nietzche). A seminal article in the New England Journal of Medicine, titled "Medical Science Under Dictatorship" even attributes the Nazi compulsion to the "rational utility" of Hegelianism.3) The movie "Hotel Rwanda" featured genocide of what ethnic group?
The Rwandan genocide involved the slaughter of the Tutsi minority by those advocating Hutu Power.
Bonus: What US military conflict immediately predated and influenced involvement this genocide? US humanitarian intervention and conflict in Somalia, which climaxed in the disaster at Mogadishu (documented/popularized by the book and movie Black Hawk Down), directly influenced the Clinton administration's decision to aggressively deter intervention in Rwanda.4) The current genocide in Sudan is primarily taking place in what region? Darfur
Bonus: What is the name of the people group being persecuted?
The Fur people (Darfur literally means "Of the Fur People"). While it is true that the killing of some Christians in Darfur is what first attracted American interest (especially of evangelicals), the majority of those killed are actually Muslim by faith.5) What is the definition of genocide?
While there are many definitions of genocide, the one most commonly agreed upon is "acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group" either by killing, mental harm, "conditions of life calculated to bring about its destruction", birth prevention, or forcible transfer of children. (cf Wikipedia; note that this definition excludes the Rape of Nanking despite its atrocity simply because it was not intended to bring about the extermination of a group... really more of an brutal act of war) Practically and historically speaking, this is only achieved when a government undertakes a systematic effort to do so. One of the greatest myths about genocide is that it "just happens" without warning or precursor; in fact, all historical genocides were pre-meditated, engineered, or at the very least fostered over long periods of time. (Note that this more conservative definition excludes Native American genocide, as it is arguable whether the US intended to wipe out the Native Americans or simply relocate them.)6) The Khmer Rouge is responsible for genocide in what country? Cambodia
Bonus: What film was made about it?
"The Killing Fields", a documentary of sorts about Dith Pran, a Cambodian journalist working with Sydney Schanberg for the NY Times during the escalation of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge's rise to power. Dith Pran passed away earlier this year in New Jersey from pancreatic cancer.7) What ethnic group was persecuted in the Forgotten Genocide (hint: 1910)?
The Armenians, persecuted by the Turkish government. Hitler is attributed for borrowing techniques and justification for the perpetration of the Holocaust from members of the Turkish government. Hitler is quoted for saying "After all, who remembers the Armenians?" in response to concern that he wouldn't be able to get away with the Holocaust.
Bonus: What university is informally known as the "Center for _____ Genocide Deniers"?
Princeton University is informally known as the Center for Armenian Genocide Deniers for its questionable appointment of Near Eastern Studies professor Heath Lowry to the position of chair (which happened to be funded by the Turkish government); Professor Lowry then published correspondence referring to the Armenian genocide instead as the "so-called Armenian genocide".8) What is the approximate death toll of the Rwandan genocide?
Though estimates vary widely, the generally accepted number is 936,000.9) The use of chemical weapons against the Kurdish people took place in what country?
Iraq by Chemical Ali.10) The Clinton Administration is best known for its actions in curbing which genocide?
Bosnian, though this took place towards the end of Clinton's presidency and it has been argued that inconsistent demonstration of force and resolve led to further suffering of the Bosnian people.
Bonus: The same administration failed to intervene in which genocide?
Rwanda; see above.11) What international documents are most widely recognized for their explicit denunciation of genocide? While the Nuremburg War Tribunals and the multiple documents produced from that convention served as the primary source of documents and thinking about human rights post-Holocaust, the true UN-approved and binding document is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which now serves as a reference point for other human rights legislation and abuse documentation. According to Wikipedia and the Guinness Book of World Records, it is the most translated document in the world.
Bonus: Who were the principal US authors/contributors of each?
The Chairman of the Commission for the drafting of the UDHR was Eleanor Roosevelt!Super bonus question: What Pulitzer prize winning author, recognized for her work on genocide, was formerly a foreign policy adviser to the Obama campaign?
Samantha Power! She was in the news most recently for calling Hilary a "monster" in politics; she voluntarily resigned as foreign policy advisor to the Obama campaign as a consequence of the fallout. She humorously refers to the event as "Monstergate" and, when I asked her about her involvement in the Obama campaign, winked at me and said, "Oh, I'll be around."How'd you do on the quiz? Part III with commentary to come...

Hmmmmmm, I got 10/11, but I don't think it was Clinton and his dealings with the Bosnians, but the Kosovars against the Serbs in #10. In the Bosnian Crisis, no nation did anything other than protest....
not bad. minored in history, so i should know some of this stuff.
so, are you an obama fan?
Three million Polish Catholics were also killed by the Nazis.
9 out of 11. B -
And you really shouldn't use Wikipedia as one of your main sources... >_<
I think you should add "How many deaths did God's genocide cause in the Bible?" Answer: 33 Million.
Also, "How many deaths did Satan's genocide cause in the Bible?" Answer: 10. Job's sons and daughters (upon a wager with God).
Enjoyed this.
@bittersunday@xanga - aye aye = A lot of the editors of Wiki are Evangelical Atheists like Felonius Monk
@ficklemistress@xanga - How many millions did Atheists Stalin, Lenin and other leaders of the same put to death in USSR. Well over anything attributed to God or so-called Christians!!
@eagleendtime@xanga - Wikipedia? It's sourced information.
And death is not determined whether bad or good by number (not saying I agree with ficklemistress).
@thirst2 - One way or another we must die, and in this life I have learned there is nothing fair or certain.
Millions of soldiers died young, in WW2 so we could have freedom.
Thousands died in our US Revolutionary War so we could have freedom.
Is it fair a young dies, never to raise a family, another dies leaving a family so we could raise our children in peace?
Then there is accidents, and diseases = no one has a lease on life.
Just adding some substance to your statement Thirst2.
Over all a very good quiz, and I agree with most of your answers but would like to clarify a few things you said in number 4:
4) The current genocide in Sudan is primarily taking place in what region? Darfur
Bonus: What is the name of the people group being persecuted?
The Fur people (Darfur literally means "Of the Fur People"). While it is true that the killing of some Christians in Darfur is what first attracted American interest (especially of evangelicals), the majority of those killed are actually Muslim by faith.
1. I wish you wouldn't make it sound like evangelicals only cared because Christians were being killed. I was reading about it and trying to inform people before the news even broke that any Christians had been killed.
2. "the killing of SOME christians" makes it sound like it's a minor number compared to the muslims...like they've killed 5 christians and 400,000 muslims. To be clear, many estimates put the number of Christians killed around 100,000-150,000. My friend works with the persecuted church in Darfur and the refugee camps that they live in now.
But in some ways if they had to kill some people, I would rather the Christians be targeted, because at least they are ready to meet their maker, the muslims however....it just breaks my heart to think of it.
3. The Muslims are being killed by Muslims for more clarification. The Black Muslims as they are known are the ones being targeted and killed, by the Arab Muslim government who are racist toward them and also believe that they practice a nominal form of Islam and to not live by the Sharia.
@eagleendtime@xanga - And what of the Crusades? Or the Spanish colonization of South and North America? Or the inquisition? Or the Reformation wars? Or the on-going wars in Ireland (Catholics V. Protestants)? Those wars were done for "holy" reasons and resulted in countless deaths in His name.
And might I remind you that Hitler was a Christian?
Hm... I just read through this, but I knew most of it I think.
I think there's a fine line between genocide and ethnic cleansing. From what I learned and remember correctly, the difference is that ethnic cleansing has no restriction on transportation, though often times ethnic cleansing still looks a lot like genocide.
@ficklemistress@xanga - How about Atheistic Communistic China. Millions upon millions.
The atheotic leaders have done as much damage as the so called Christians and don't forget what Pagans have done too.
Humans have always found a reason to kill each other, involving women, greed, lust (power or land), animosity, racial, jealousy, and the list can go on. Not just religious reasons.
And oh by the way Real Christians don't persecute. The phonies do.
from this link:http://digg.com/world_news/Religion_kills_What_about_Atheists
rlh1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"With
an honest evaluation of human history, there is no way possible to
rationalize that religion is not a major cause of conflict." ---- I
couldn't agree with you more.
Chinese Communists -> 65 million dead, 40 year period - Economic ideology, not religion
Cambodian Commies -> 2 million dead, 5 year period - Economic ideology, not religion
Soviet (Russian)Commies ->20 mill dead, 50 year period -Economic ideology, not religion
(and yes the Communists leaders were atheists -- all suppressed religion)
Germany & Japan WWII ->62 mill dead -- 8 years,Imperialism, conquest of land - racism.
Crusades -> Hard to find,High est is 9 million. 130 year period - Religious wars.
Inquisition -> Low number 6,000, high number 9 million. 500 years --- Religious.
Salem Witch Trials --> 20 people........ 1 year ----------------Wackos....
The Crusades and the Inquisition are hard to find accurate numbers. Life is too short to wade through.
The
pedophile priests and nuns, the spread of AIDS, the diseases in the new
world ( I didn't know that there was a Christian virus) are all pretty
lame. Disease and perverts happen without religious influence.
There
are many religious slaughters that you forgot to mention. The Muslims
killed up to 100 million Hindus, Zoroastrians in a 500 year period in
their conquest of east. Definitely religious.
But back to the
first 4 on the list. 149 million dead in a 60 year period for
non-religious reasons seems to make the author correct. ---> More
died in non-religious aggression and persecution in the shortest time
then any religious persecution and wars in history
....................................................
@eagleendtime@xanga - By the way, you are not the one to define "Christian" as only God knows our hearts. As far as scripture goes, a Christian is someone who has received the Lord Jesus as Savior (John 1:12), trusts Him alone for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 4:12), has put no trust in his own efforts but to please God (Isaiah 64:6), and has repented from his/her sins (Mark 1:15).
As far as your claim that word's recent wars and miseries are the blame of atheists... Let us assume that you are correct, which you aren't. (You get your information form religious propaganda websites.)
Offset those assumed deaths with the progress that atheists have brought you and your family. THOSE people are the people who have improved your life 1000000 fold. They are the Scientists who you stab in the back, all the while enjoying the fruits of their labor -- germ theory (and all modern medicine), technology, the very computer you are typing this out on. Everything from your food, to your clothes, to your home, your job, your LIFE, are owed to the people who created our modern lives, and would be SO MUCH BETTER THAN IT EVEN IS CURRENTLY if not for the religious zealots who hinder the progress of man with their retarded dogmas. Remember when the world was flat? Catholic idea. Then the world was round but the center of the universe? Catholic idea. On and on and on, until now when you will be forced to accept that Darwin was right. But how many years will have passed before the paradigm shift will be allowed to happen due to religious fundamentalists? Religion not only kills, it holds back human progress.
And if you are such a critic of *gasp* atheist China, why not try boycotting their wares for one single day? I will give you a million dollars if you can.
@ficklemistress@xanga - I didn't define what a Christian is (God did by His Word), and I don't base my facts on just religious propaganda sites either. Care to dig out my History books too, I happened to have read quite a bit of history. ( I have a few decades of reading behind me)
Oh by the way some 63 million Christians lost their lives at the hand of religious zealots through the ages. Mostly at the hand of the Roman Church which claims to be christian but isn't (compare the Catholic beliefs to the bible and it the church doesn't hardly rate - No Mary worship in the bible, No intercession prayers to saints in the bible, and the list goes on).
Phonies kill. Cain was religious - killed righteous Abel because Cain was Jealous.
Pharisees was religious - killed innocent Jesus through Atheistic Pilate (Pilate said what is truth?) again jealousy
When God sent his Prophets to correct Israel they where persecuted by the Lying Religious.
Atheists had their chance to prove a better system and showed with Stalin, Mao and similar like that they are no better than any other Religion. Atheisism is a religion and they have zealots too.
There are Professing Christians and Possessing Christians of the Holy Spirit - those with, will only do but good. Professing tend to hatred, jealousy, and so on and will persecute the righteous.
It was Cain's group that developed Civilization.
As to development it isn't just the Atheists who have progressed us as you imply. Many men of faith have progress in Science too.
Usually Great Men of Faith tend to stay out of politics and focus on one thing - getting souls saved.
Well Fickle it's been good to discuss these points, but you have a made up mind and so do I. I see your points but a lot of data is missing from it. Man is designed to worship, and will worship something whether it been his auto, work, women, God, idols, TV or so on.
As to China - America is sold out, because there is hardly a true American. Most Corporate Executives and Politicians being the greater turncoats of America, they worship that mighty dollar or power they have.
One thing is for certain when you draw your last breath you will know if you where right or wrong. So with that I bid you a deep and sincere Lord Bless You.
@eagleendtime@xanga - One more thing before you go: "I didn't define what a Christian is (God did by His Word)" ... "the Roman Church which claims to be christian but isn't (compare the Catholic beliefs to the bible and it the church doesn't hardly rate - No Mary worship in the bible, No intercession prayers to saints in the bible, and the list goes on)."
Do you define what a Christian is or do you allow God to o that? One of the signs that you are a member of a cult is that you are able to hold to contradicting clauses in your mind at the same time and believe that both are true.
Likewise, I wish you a peaceful and delusion-free life.
