This Man Might Already Be in Your Church!
Guest blog submitted by Stanelle
The man was a definite radical! He incited crowds to riot and he could never be alone in an area without getting someone so angry at him for his radical religious views and subversive political views that this radical found himself in the center of a great deal of violence! This guy specialized in standing up in open public spaces and making radical statements, which often led his listeners to question the teachings of their governments and their religious leaders!
The guy was and definitely still is a passive terrorist and a subversive. One only need to read his own words to read of his fomentations of passive aggression for his cause:"Five times I have received at the hands of the Jews forty lashes less one. Three times I have been beaten with rods; once I was stoned. Three times I have been shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from... (those who pretend to be championing our cause, but are really spies against it), ...in toil and in hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and in thirst, often without food, and in cold and exposure!"*
What a personal record! His public record is even worse! He was in and out of prisons, publicly defying public officials to their faces and telling them off regardless of the consequences of his praise of his so-called Religious Mentor, whom he claimed to have met after he fell off a horse. Since this radical met his Spiritual Guide in a vision, one can truly wonder about this madman's terroristic teachings!
The last that I read about this guy was when I was reading a letter that the man wrote to some of the members of his revolutionary cell in some Middle-Eastern city. This madman was supposedly being held by some Italians, who were threatening to behead him for his radical teachings! I AM WARNING YOU:
Be on the lookout for the subversive named Saul of Tarsus, alias Paul of Tarsus! He is also known by some well-organized members of his religious movement as Saint Paul. Letters from this madman might be circulating amongst the youth of your churches, synagogues, and mosques! He hides in the business community as a maker of handmade tents!
This guy is a known fomenter of religious and civil rebellion. If you let his letters run loose in your religious organizations, you'll be in for a peck of trouble! This man and his literature are a definite threat to the Established Order!

Do you ever think of Paul and other New Testament figures as radicals in their society?

How can anyone not think of them as radicals in their society?
During that time, Paul was in a situation in which government officials were telling him to stop preaching the Word. (If he did, however, he'd be disobeying the Great Commission that Jesus gave after His resurrection.)
Remember, too, that Jesus said to his disciples, "If the world hates Me, the world will hate you, too."
In terms of going against a government that mandated willful disobedience to God at that time in history, yes, then I could see where Paul would be viewed as a radical. In terms of his being true to Jesus, no, he wasn't. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating rebelling against the government just to rebel against the government. Please understand where I'm coming from here.)
I think the irony is that for the longest time in our country, it was radical to NOT be a Christian. However, our culture has gotten to the point where it's becoming rare to find people passionate about Jesus. I think it's good for Christianity that following Christ means being 'radical.' It seems that very little good comes from cultures where Christianity is the status quo. It's not that it's necessarily bad that the majority claims to be a Christian, however, it's often the case that anything that is the status quo isn't given critical thought. While the Religious Right is bemoaning the lack of Christian influence in government, I'm not sure that's the worst thing that could happen to Christianity.
Living in a fallen world really bites but we have to realize that a lot of people will not like us because of our radical beliefs. Just looking at how the media portrays us a right-wing nut jobs is kinda depressing.

Even if when we are complete imbeciles sometimes. We also have to remember to reach out to those who oppose us . Not in a hateful and accusing way , but in a loving way.
Are you kidding?! They definitely were radicals. Just as Jesus was a radical. Why do you think so many people wanted to kill them?
You wrote: This guy is a known fomenter of religious and civil rebellion.
Yes, Paul was a radical, but I don't think in quite the way you may be saying.
Paul was not purposefully fomenting religious and civil rebellion.
Paul went out of his way to tell us to submit to authorities because all authorities are in place by the hand of God (e.g.-Romans 13) and he
did the same. Yet Paul did not compromise his allegiance or obedience to God when push came to shove--when times came that the authorities were telling him to do something that went against what God was telling him to do. Paul was respectful of those in authority over him (e.g.-Acts 23:1-5).
As for the riots. Paul preached, but the people rioted. Paul was not
attempting to rouse people up to riot. It's only because people didn't like the message of Christ that they rioted, in particular: 1) the Jews
who didn't like his message because most of them did not accept Jesus as Messiah (and you can see where they followed Paul to stir up the crowds, e.g.-Acts 14:19, 17:13), and 2) others didn't like because it affected their livelihood (Acts 16:19; 19:23ff - money talks!).
When people were carried away with Paul's miracles, he attempted to subdue the crowd (Acts 14:18).
Paul knew his battle wasn't against flesh and blood. He was not out to start a religious or civil rebellion or revolution per se but rather to
take the message of Christ to the people, to present to them the Resurrection Life which transforms people from the inside. The only rebellion Paul was seeking to bring about was the rebellion against the prince of the power of the air, when people come to Christ and are set free from self, sin and Satan and they can now break free from the chains that have held them because of the power of the Gospel of Christ has come to set them free from the tyranny that enslaved them.
The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.
Totally knew this was about Paul before even reading the second paragraph.
Wow. Good stuff.
@naphtali_deer@xanga - naphtali, you and I are on exactly the same page when it comes to common postions on this issue!
They were definitely radicals. But Jesus was as well.
@tillseptemberends@xanga - we are loving them. its not hate that we tell people they are going to hell because of the way they live. its not hate to tell people that there is a God and he is God and they are not. Its not hate, its love that we reveal truth to them. they already hate God.
i know a streetpreacher who always gets asked "how many poeple have you led to the lord today?" and his reply is "all of them, they choose to accept him or not." and some do.
@Cable_mt - That streetpreacher's reply is awesome!
