What Does Thanksgiving Mean to You?

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time but what does it mean to you?

To some it's a day off of work, to others it's a great time to eat more than they really need to feel satisfied, to others it may be a day of sadness because of a grandparent or parent that is no longer there to enjoy dinner with them. And to others it's a day to be thankful to God for everything he has done throughout your life.

While being thankful to God is the most important, I have deep sympathy for those who have lost loved ones that they used to gather with. When you're tempted to be unthankful think of what you have that others may not have, a house, family, money, cars, children, the list goes on and on.

Before I was married, my family use to get a pen and paper out and each person would write down all the things he or she was thankful for in a time space of 10 or 15 minutes. Then we would each read off our list. It was a yearly family tradition and we all had fun doing it. Of course we never got everything written down that we were thankful for but we got most of the basics written down.

I have two questions for you, what does Thanksgiving mean to you? And what are you most thankful for this year?

It's a time to reflect on all the blessings we have.  A time to be with family and friends.  Cook good food.  I love Thanksgiving.  I am most thankful for my sobriety  - I will be 4 years clean and sober on December 30, 2008.  Without my sobriety I won't have any of the above.  Great Post!

considering that the whole notion that the Puritans were persecuted in England is a joke, i find its original meaning to be somewhat offensive.  i just enjoy it as a day off school and work, a day to spend quality time with family and friends, and a little "me" time as well.

    Good food.
Thankful that I'll be able to spend it with my boyfriend and his family.

Thanksgiving is a time to get together with friends and family, and celebrate because of your connection with them.  There are no gifts really involved, spirits are typically high, and everyone is there to gather for a good time.

I'm most thankful for my family and my significant other.  Both these things mean so much to me, and I'm really disappointed I won't be home to share this time with them.  There will be years in the future, but I prefer not to waste time!

As far as holidays go, Thanksgiving is definitely my favorite.

Christmas, on the other hand?  Don't even get me started.  GRR!

@godofthelost@xanga - totally think the same goes for me. I love spending time with family and friends over a good home cooked meal.  Hope your Thanksgiving is great!

I'm not gonna be home this year to spend Thanksgiving with my family but I'm looking forward to getting together with close friends. I'm so incredibly thankful for the blessings we have and the chance we get to enjoy food. A friend sent me this article today and it really broke my heart...

Thanksgiving is a holiday to give thanks to what is truly of values to us.  A time for all family social gatherings.  And I am most thankful for is God, family, and friends.

You know, I think about my blessings often, not just at Thanksgiving. I am also thankful for things that seem bad or not to be thankful for at the time. But I try to ponder it a bit more at Thanksgiving, which to me is also a day to have a family gathering and bring everyone closer together.

Thanksgiving = FOOD , Gathering and pigging out with friends and family

Thankful for : people that showed up for the family dinner

It means feasting and remembering what thankfulness looks like. It means an opportunity to sincerely give thanks with many others (for me, it's my congregation and the impoverished people in our community).

I'm thankful for tons; from hot showers and socks to a job and sanity.

Thanksgiving is a great holiday that I'd love to enjoy getting together with all of my relatives. Unfortunately, they live a state away and this year I have to work on Thanksgiving day (the whole week, actually!) so that we can't make the trip there. So it will be sad for me this year because we won't be getting together with any of our family....

I am most thankful for the friendships and relationships with people that I have...I think that's one of the most important things in life, so I really am thankful. And then all of the material things I have as well, I really can't complain. I'll try to remember that when I do feel like complaining!

Thanksgiving to me is the time where I get to go and be with my family and eat food. : / I wish we did more things, but that's about it. I also am celebrating Thanksgiving for the indians and 'white men' when they sailed from England !

I'm most thankful for having God in my life. I'm thankful that I was given a wonderful boyfriend who I can share my thoughts with and love and care for. I'm thankful for my wonderful family and friends who have helped me all my life. I'm also thankful for the opportunity to get to further my education, by going to college.

I look at Thanksgiving as a time to spend with family and friends.  It's an opportunity to have a couple days off work so that I may have that time for family and friends.

I'm thankful for many things, but lately, as we have many "Thanksgiving Trees" at work, the thing that comes to mind the most is my health.  I have stumbled upon some injuries and sicknesses in my time, but overall, I am healthy enough to live.  I am plenty healthy to travel and participate in all the activities I would like.  That is by far the greatest  blessing.

To quote a little Nas here, the Indians save the Pilgrim, and in return the Pilgrims killed 'em. They call it Thanksgiving, we call it Holiday Hell-Day (-Stillmatic). I'm thankful that Native Americans can forgive us for the atrocities some of our ancestors committed, e.g. broken treaties, mass relocation, slavery, genocide, etc. As if that wasn't bad enough, then there's the annual Turkey Holocaust... just so you can gather around and have that 'family all at home' feel for the holidays.

    You're all fucking despicable.

Nah, I'm kidding. Let's continue to shit on them and kill turkeys... hell, we've done it for this long without remorse, why not continue? Seriously though, Happy Thanksgiving.

I used to be sick on Thanksgiving and Christmas, most of the time, but that didn't change my love of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving means cooler weather, good food and gluttony to me. I am a thankful person in general, and this Thanksgiving I'm thankful that my husband, dog and myself are alive and that we have a loving, peaceful home.
  • TrumvilleOrbison@xanga

for me, thanksgiving is a time to reflect and actively practice gratitude. it's something i need to do more of all the time, but having a day set aside for it helps recenter me i guess.

and hopefully starting in '10, thanksgiving will mean tofurkey to me. ;] unfortunately my mother is currently really angry that i'm trying to phase into vegetarianism.

I think of Thanksgiving as Christmas Lite. You get the wonderful traditions of good food, house decorated, and family and friends you love gathered around the table - without the stress and buying frenzy of Christmas.

Thanksgiving is a quiet, gentle holiday.  I love taking out the good silver, using the best china and smelling the meal baking. Having family and friends in the house is a joy and playing board games after dinner a much anticipated event. It's also a time to look back over the year and be grateful for God's blessings.
